BIOGRAPHY Kim was born in the UK and moved to Australia in 1988. She has two Masters degrees in visual arts practice and theory, as well as objects conservation. Kim taught for three years in ceramics, object design, conceptual art and performance art modules at Sydney College of the Arts, The University of Sydney, and taught art, design and architecture modules for three years, within the Architecture program at The University of Nottingham, Ningbo China Campus. Kim has previously lived in Australia, Germany, England, and China, and travelled extensively while making and exhibiting her art in International exhibitions and symposiums. She has also published and presented several conference papers on diverse topics including objects based learning, craft theory, and art conservation. Currently she is working as an Objects Conservator within the conservation department at the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra.
STATEMENT Kim’s arts practice explores objects as tools, belongings, symbols, reflections of humanity, or things-in-themselves. Key themes of Kim’s work include notions of identity (both human and object), home, and belonging (to a place, people or community). Although Kim trained as a ceramic artist, her practice incorporates painting, knitting, found objects assemblages, textiles, collage, and drawing. Presently she is working on two series. Home: here where I stand is a series of still-life portraits which explore the notion of home being the place one is in the present moment. Kim’s sculptural series of Cocoons and Refuge Nests are often made on location with found materials and represent the need to create a home and a place to belong wherever one may find themselves.
